| Congratulations to: German World Magazine Dear Reader, This year, as most of you already know, is a very special year for the German- American community in the US: not only do we celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Berlin-Airlift but also 400 years of German immigration to the US. It was in 1608, when the first German settlers set foot on American soil and started a new life in Jamestown, Virginia. On this occasion, German World produced a German-American History Special (photo). Please e-mail us at office@german-world.com if you would like to obtain a copy. These two memorable historic anniversaries were not only commemorated at the traditional ‘Day of German Unity’ receptions on October 3, hosted by the German Embassy in Washington DC and the Consulates General of Germany in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, and San Francisco, but also at numerous celebrations over the weekend which were continued on October 6, the official German-American Day. In Southern California, you had two opportunities to celebrate German- American Day: at the Phoenix Club in Anaheim (www.thephoenixclub.com) and in Downtown Los Angeles where the North-American Jazz Alliance performed in a free open-air concert on California Plaza. (www.goethe.de/losangeles) The Arizona Center of Germanic Culture hosted an event at the club house of Westbrook Village Vistas in Peoria on October 5, and was joined by a very special guest who had come from far way for this occasion: Peter Soppa, the official media representative of the emigrant center BallinStadt in Hamburg, gave an exclusive presentation about the museum, its research facilities, and the latest developments. If you missed this event, don’t miss the Phoenix Octoberfest October 11. www.ac4gc.org In Washington D.C., a special ceremony took place at the German-American friendship garden on October 6 organized by the German Heritage Foundation and the United German- American Committee. The much anticipated opening of the new German- American Heritage Center in Washington DC will take place later this year. www. ugac.org In Pennsylvania, the Liberty Bell Wanderers and German-American Heritage Foundation of the USA organized a 5K and 10K non-competitive walk through Historic Philadelphia on October 4 which was part of a weekend full of special events at the German Society of Pennsylvania with performances of the Landesjugendorchester Rheinland Pfalz on October 5 and 6 as a special highlight. www.germansociety.org And while the Oktoberfest in Munich came to a close on October 5, the Oktoberfest fun continues throughout America. Petra Schürmann, Publisher Innovative Concept for Day of German Unity Monument by GRAFT and ART+COM For the longest time, there have been talks about creating a new monument in Berlin commemorating Germany’s peaceful reunification. Even 19 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Germany is still without one. On September 30, 2008, shortly before Germany’s National Day on October 3, The Day of German Unity, the German architect group GRAFT presented a new concept for a monument symbolizing Germany’s freedom and unity. Their idea of a monument which they developed in cooperation with ART+COM is called “Einheit ueberall” (unity everywhere) and is a gigantic flag that is neither bound to any flagpole nor to any specific location. It would fly over the capitals of Germany’s states and return once a month to the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin where the reunification began. For more information visit www.graftlab. com American TV-Star Eric Braeden Visits Hamburg and BallinStadt. The German-born actor Eric Braeden arrived in Hamburg on September 12 upon invitation of the City of Hamburg where a fun-packed visitor’s program awaited him. He also had the opportunity to do some ancestry research at the emigrant center BallinStadt. Hamburg officials were extremely happy to be able to welcome the Hollywood star and honored him with an entry in the Golden Book of the City for his many years of furthering transatlantic relations. Braeden stressed the strong feelings that he has for the City of Hamburg for it was from here, in 1959, that he set off for the United States. During the award ceremony in the Hamburg City Hall, he emphasized his emotional ties to this metropolitan city in Northern Germany: "For me, Hamburg has always meant both home and a longing for a far-off place." The charming actress has also been invited to attend Germany’s prestigious International Film Festival in Hof and the International Emmy Awards in New York on November 19, 2008.www. ninafranoszek.com Book Tip There have been many immigrant stories written and published so far. One new publication, ‘Weeds like us’ by Gunter Nitsch especially caught our attention. It is the very honest and heart-going account of a young boy growing up in East Prussia under the Nazi Regime and fleeing to the West after the end of WWII. The uprooting of seven million civilians - women, children, and elderly men - from their homes in the German provinces of East Prussia, Pomerania, and Silesia following World War II is largely unknown in the United States. ‘Weeds Like Us’ is a gripping true adventure story about the author's own East Prussian family. The author's earliest years were spent in relative comfort on his grandfather's farm in East Prussia during World War II. For him, life in Hitler's Germany was the natural order of things. Then, in January 1945, the Russians rolled into East Prussia. Full of unexpected twists and turns, ‘Weeds Like Us’ takes the reader on a journey that lasted for six years, as the author's family tried to make its way safely to the West. www.weedslikeus.com JOB OFFERS California: Bi-Lingual Pre-School Teachers (Santa Monica/West L.A.)
