         The Sudetenland

"Liberec will never again be Reichenberg.  We will clear Liberec of the German enemies, and we will do it so
thoroughly that not the smallest place will remain where the German seed could grow once more.  We shall
expel all the Germans, we shall confiscate their property, we shall de-nationalize not only the town but the
whole area so that the victorious spitit of Slavdom shall permeate the country from the frontier range to the
interior.  The government is determined to settle the question of the Germans uncompromisingly and
unflinchingly.  We are aware that, in the West, various reactionary rotectors of the Germans are at work.  But
the government will not be misled or softened by any pressure, any campaigns, any libellous attacks.  It is for us
a decisive and encouraging fact that the Soviet Union stands by us in the question of transferring the Germans,
and that Marshal Stalin himself has the greatest possible understanding for our mendeavors to get rid of the
Germans.  We will not allow even some hundreds of thousands of Germans to remain in this country.  We do
not want any Germans along our north-western frontier, we want Czechoslovakia to form one integrally Slav
teritory with Poland and the the Soviet Union."  Kopecky, the Stalinist Minister of Propaganda in the Czech
cabinet, stated in a speech at Reichenberg (Liberec) on July 25, 1945.

Ludwig Ganghofer,  a much loved author of novels about the homeland, was born in
1855.  After beginning his education in mechanical engineering, he ended up studying
the history of literature and philosophy in Munich, Berlin and the University of
Leipzig, where he received a doctorate.  His first play was the highly successful "Der
Herrgottschnitzer von Ammergau" (The Lord's woodcarver of Immergau) in 1880 in
Munich.  When it played in Berlin, it was a smash hit.  Ganghofer worked as a dramatic
adviser, a freelance writer and an editor until 1891 when he devotged his time to
writing.  He was a personal friend of Kaiser Wilhelm II, and worked as a war
correspondent during the First World War.  He wrote stronly patriotic accounts of the
war.  He returned to writing books at war's end.  His last book, written shortly before
his death, was "Das Land der Bayern in Farben-photographic" was dedicated to king Ludwit III of Bavaria.
Ganghofer's work is still published dotay and popular for their its simple, healthy Alpine themes.

Kaufbeuren, his birthplace, is a 1,000 year old free imperial city in the Bavarian Allgaeu area.  It's landmark is
the Five Buttons Tower, built in 1420.  The narrow lanes, old walls and towers from the middle ages are still in
place.  Founded by a Frankish Knight around the year 800, the town played host to the kings and emperors of
the Middle Ages.  Neaby is a township called Neu Gablonz.  In another time, in another place, a town called
Gablonz an der Neisse in northern Bohemia was the second largest town of the Liberec Region and it had for
centuries a large German majority, mainly glass blowers and glass workers.  By a Czech decree of June 21,
1945, all property belonging to the "German Race" was confiscated without compensation.  The Germans who
survived the genocide were expelled from Gablonz, renamed Jablonec, and migrated near to Kaufbeuren and
founded the township of Neu gablonz in Bavaria.

Old Place Names
"Sudeten" refers to a mountain range 200 miles long and 20 to 40 miles wide...

 HISTORY OF THE SUDETENLAND

The Sudetenland encompasses an area of 27,000 sq. kilometers (10,400 sq. miles) in Bohemia, Moravia and
Sudeten Silesia (the latter, being part of Silesia which in 1763, after the Seven Years War  between Maria Theresia
of Austria and Frederick the Great of Prussia, had remained part of Austria.)

Sudeten refers to a mountain range some 200 miles long and approximately 20 - 40 miles wide, covering north of
Bohemia and Moravia as well as part of Sudeten Silesia. The term "Sudeten Germans" has been in use since the
beginning of the century to describe the 3-1/2 million Germans in the three provinces which used to be known as
the lands of the Bohemian Crown. The Sudeten Germans are ethnically related to the Bavarians, Franconians,
Saxons and Silesians, thus containing elements of the major German tribes.

Before the Czechs, a Slav tribe, invaded the central regions of Bohemia and Moravia, these lands had been
inhabited by Celtic Germanic tribes called The Boii, the Marcomanni and the Quadi. In the 12th and
13th centuries Bohemian dukes invited German farmers, miners, craftsmen, merchants and artists to settle in these
lands in order to develop them, particularly the mountainous frontier regions.

For more than 700 years Germans and Czechs lived together peacefully. It is true that from time to time there were
tensions and conflicts, e.g., the Hussite wars in the 15th century, but they were fought for religious and social
reasons, rather than on racial grounds. It should be mentioned, however, that some regions within the
Sudetenland were inhabited exclusively by German-speaking folks who had no contact whatsoever with Czechs,
such as the southern part of Moravia; they were indistinguishable in every respect from the neighboring Austrians.

Bohemia and Moravia had for centuries been part of the "Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation", and
Emporers such as Charles IV and Rudolf II had their seat in Prague, the capital of Bohemia. Charles IV founded
the first German university in Prague in 1348.  In 1526 the lands of the Bohemian Crown, including the regions in
which the Sudeten Germans lived, came under the rule of the Habsburgs. They thus became part of the "Holy
Roman Empire of the German Nation" until 1806, and of the German Confederation from 1815 to 1866. In 1848
the Sudeten Germans were among those who elected members of the first German parliament which met in the
Church of St. Paul in Frankfurt.  Until 1918 the Sudeten Germans were part of the Austro-Hungarian
Monarchy. The end of WW I in 1918 resulted in the breakup of the Austro-Hungarian multi-national empire. The
6.7 million Czechs demanded a state of their own in which the highly industrialized Sudetenland was to be
incorporated.

Denial of Right for Self-Determination in 1919!

Even before the proclamation of the CSR on October 18, 1918, the Sudeten Germans invoked the right of self-
determination and demanded that their homeland be united with Austria, which in turn expressed
the wish to be united with the German Reich.

On March 4, 1919, Czech soldiers fired on Sudeten Germans who were demonstrating peacefully for their right to
self-determination. The 54 people killed were the first martyrs of the Sudeten German fight for self-determination.
The world remained silent.

The peace conference at St. Germain in 1919 ruled against the union of the Sudeten German region with Austria
as well as the union of Austria with Germany.

Thus, against their wishes, the Sudeten Germans were forced into Czechoslovakia, a country which they rejected
and in whose foundation and constitution they played virtually no part, a country which disregarded their rights as
a people and which discriminated against them as individual citizens. The population of the CSR in 1921
consisted of:

6.7 million Czechs;    0.5 million Ruthenians;
3.1 million Germans;  0.3 million Jews;
2 million Slovaks;        0.1 million Poles.
0.7 million Hungarians;

Czechization Measures against the Sudeten Germans:

The Czechs broke their promise to make their newly-established country multinational, modelled after Switzerland.
Instead, they set out on a policy of Czechization, conducted as follows:

1.Against the German language and culture by closing down Germanschools and by declaring Czech the only
official language to be used in all communications with the authorities;

2. by ousting Germans from civil service jobs and in enterprises owned and controlled by the government;

3. by curbing the German economy and taking over German firms into Czech ownership;

and

4. by restricting the powers oflocal government in the German-speaking towns and districts.

As a result of this policy, one out of every three Sudeten Germans was unemployed during the depression, and they
had to live on the extremely meager social welfare benefits.

The policies on finance and exchange control, in particular on borrowing on customs tariffs, on investment,
transport, nationalization of enterprises, on the promotion of cultural institutions and on student grants, were all
designed to further the aims of Czechization, thus creating a unitary Czech nation which was in fact a
multinational country.

The Treaty of Munich in 1938:

The anti-German policy of the CSR government increased the tensions between the Sudeten Germans and the state
in which they had been  annexed against their will to a point where the situation became
unbearable. This, combined with the pressure exerted by Hitler and the German Reich, led to the Sudeten crises
which reached its climax in the fall of 1938 when Britain and France proposed that the Sudeten region should be
ceded to German in accordance with the recommendations made by Lord Runciman, the arbitrator in the Czech-
German conflict. Czechoslovakia accepted this proposal on September 21, 1938. The subsequent Munich
Agreement, signed a week later, merely spelled out the details of the annexation of the Sudetenland to
Germany. To the Sudeten Germans this meant the realization of their demands made in 1918/19.

            West Prussian Mennonite Villages
                      Locations and Polish Names
                    Compiled by Glenn H. Penner

[Note - The Grandfather of Johannes Rammund De Balliel Lawrora - Anton De Balliel, was born in Schoensee]
The following table includes the names of West Prussian villages where Mennonites are known to have
lived according to census data from 1776 and 1820 as well as several other miscellaneous sources. The
reason for constructing this table is to have a single source for finding the present day Polish names for
these villages and their locations within Poland. Most of this information came from the Kartenmeister
database found at http://www.kartenmeister.com/preview/databaseuwe.asp. Additional information
came from Peter J. Klassen’s book A Homeland For Strangers : An Introduction To Mennonites In
Poland And Prussia. Some alternate German names and spellings for village names, which are found in
18th century sources, are included. I have collected these during the last 30 years of searching through
pre-1820 West Prussian documents. Adalbert Goertz has been very helpful in determining the identities
of some of these older spellings.
Those who use this table should be aware that the situation in West Prussia was quite different from
that in Russia and the early years in Canada. There were no exclusively Mennonite villages in West
Prussia, although there were periods in history when a particular West Prussian village was solely
occupied by Mennonites. On the other hand there were many villages in West Prussia that seemed to
not have had any Mennonite residents prior to the early 1800s. Much like the situation in Manitoba, the
Mennonite population spread out over the years. This table does not contain the names of all of the
West Prussian villages where Mennonites have ever lived. Such a list would probably be several times
larger. I have tried to restrict this list to the period from the 1520’s to the 1820’s. Inclusion of a village
in this list is entirely at my discretion. Simply because a Mennonite family lived in a particular West
Prussian village at some point in time does not make that a “Mennonite village” by my definition.
I have used the following column headings:
German Name – note that umlauts are not used. Instead “oe” “ae” and “ue” are used.
Region – this is the approximate geographical region in West Prussia and is a very loosely defined
category. There are several villages that could be classified as belonging to two regions. The main
reason for including this category is to distinguish diiferent villages with the same name.
Menn – indicates to which Mennonite church the majority of residents in the village would have
belonged. Danz. = Danzig; Baerw. = Baerwalde (Fuerstenwerder); Tieg. = Tiegenhagen; Orl. =
Orlofferfelde; Lad. = Ladekopp; Ros. = Rosenort; Ewld = Elbing-Ellerwald; Heub. = Heubuden; Trag.
= Tragheimerweide; Thdf = Thiensdorf-Marcushof; Mont. = Montau; Ssee = Schoensee; Prze =
Przechowka; Ones = Obernessau.
Polish Name – usually the Polish name given in the Kartenmeister database. Note that there are
variations in the spellings of these names and the Latin script equivalents of some Polish letters are
used (e.g. l rather than ?)
Coordinates – latitude and longitude in degrees and minutes according to the Kartenmeister database.
Map – “yes” indicates that the village can be located in the map at the end of Peter Rempel’s book “
Mennonite Migrations to Russia (1788-1828). Winnipeg, 2000.
