But alas, Heidi's scheming Aunt has other plans for her - ones that will bring her great financial reward - and Heidiis thus dragged away from her new home, back to the city. Here she befriends Clara who is wheelchair-bound, and through their friendship, Clara gains the courage to walk again, Auntie's plans crumble around her, and it all ends happily ever after for our heroine, back in her happy Alpine home... Since it was first published in 1880, "Heidi" has sold more than 100million copies around the world, in 50 different languages, and there have been numerous live-action and animated adaptations. This British-German-Canadian co-production was made for $4.5m. The British part of that triumverate is Telemagination, and "Heidi" was their very first foray into feature animation. The film itself is a hand-drawn affair directed by Telemagination's Alan Simpson, whose director credits include the third series of "Farthing Wood" and the Bafta-nominated and Annecy-winning Christmas special "The Last Polar Bear". Topping the list of voices on the cast list is Christopher Plummer, who plays Heidi's cantankerous Grandfather - he being no stranger to mountains, of course... In the UK, "Heidi" was released straight to video/DVD on 26th September 2005. But our European neighbours were more fortunate. The film received a German cinema debut in December 2005... |
