Died 06/04/2008 - Reinhold Pabel

      Hamburger antiquarian Reinhold Pabel
Died on 4. June 2008 in his native Hamburg,
at the age of 92 years.

Pabel Reinhold, 15 November 1915 born in Hamburg, led as
antiquary and writer, an unusual life: 1936 Start of studies in
Catholic theology and philosophy in Münster, participation as a
soldier in the Second World War, American prisoners of war,
escape from the prison camp in the United States, family formation,
in the spring 1948 Opening of a "Book Mart" (apply for a permit in
the USA!) in Chicago (under the name "Philbrick"), was arrested
by the FBI, public process and a temporary stay in Hamburg in the
mid-1960s, then the final return to Germany - as an American
citizen. Founded his own Antiquariat Reinhold Pabel, previously
business partner of Rudolf Habelt in Bonn, 1974 in Hamburg in the
historic Krameramtswohnungen, so to speak 'in the shadow of
Michel'. In the early 1980s came to a branch of the English plank.
Both shops remain, for nearly two decades, led by the daughter and
son-Lucie Pabel Gottwalt Pankow - co-founder of the Hamburg
libet quod Antiquarian Book Fair.

Besides his career as a bookseller, but especially after the
retirement 1990/91 Reinhold Pabel found the time to write
successful books on local history projects, some of which appeared
in several editions. Worth mentioning the publication "In the
shadow of Michel" (1978), "hamburger culture carousel between
the Baroque and Enlightenment" (1996) and "Old Hamburg street
name" (2001). As early as 1940 a report appeared on a pilgrimage
trip to the Holy Mount Athos ("Enemies are human", dt "enemies
are people too") in Greece, 1955, two years later also translated
into German autobiography.

The funeral was held on Friday (6th June) at the cemetery in
Hamburg-Ohlsdorf. An obituary of Reinhold Pabel appeared in the
August issue of the magazine "Off the Books" (August 8), see
Kai-Uwe Scholz: Hamburg - Chicago and back. 50 years ago
founded his Antiquariat Reinhold Pabel. In: From the Books 1998, A
