Steuben Parade 2011

Dear friends:

Happy new year from the German-American Committee and
everyone at the Steuben Parade... we have started it well, and
quite a few things point to 2011 being a great year for our
community. Here are some details I want to share with all of
you.

First of all, the 54th German-American Steuben Parade will be
held on Saturday, September 17, 2011 on Fifth Avenue in New
York. Early on, we are dealing with a large number of
marching groups from Germany - bands, dance groups,
Karneval, Schützen, Tracht, and others - so it looks like we
will once again have a colorful parade representing all aspects
of our culture.

One of our biggest projects for 2011 will be to get the Steuben
Parade broadcast live on Fox 5. We have had early discussions
with the TV station and the production company and things
are looking very good. However, this will be an expensive
project and every support you can give is greatly appreciated.
We welcome donations here and we will send our more
information within the next few weeks as it becomes available.

The state of Niedersachsen will be our official guest state and
Ministerpräsident David McAllister - a German with Scottish
roots and the successor to now-President of Germany,
Christian Wulff - will personally attend the Steuben Parade
and he is already looking forward to his visit. As a matter of
fact, Mr. McAllister has been to New York before and he has
visited, among other places, the Plattduetsche Park in
Franklin Square. Many of our friends there have their roots in
Niedersachsen, specifically in the area between Cuxhaven,
Bremerhaven, and Hamburg... you might recognize the names
of villages like Bremervörde, Sievern, Otterndorf, or Bad
Bederkesa. Clubs in Franklin Square are named after them for
the immigrants coming from there. The latter, Bad Bederkesa,
is also the home town of Ministerpräsident McAllister.

Steuben Parade General Chairman Lars Halter met with the
Hon. David McAllister, Ministerpräsident of the State of
Niedersachsen, last week at the Staatskanzlei in
Hannover/Germany; Mr. McAllister was happy to receive a
Steuben Bear, and is already looking forward to marching in
the 54th Annual Steuben Parade on Sept. 17, 2011.

As every year, the Steuben Parade Committee greatly
appreciates your input and your ideas. Share your vision with
us, and we will try our best to implement whatever helps us
make our wonderful parade bigger and better. Also, I want to
encourage you to attend all of our events, including the
Steuben Parade Gala on Friday, September 16, 2011.
Information about this elegant and star-studded event will be
available later in the year.

At this point, I would like to bring some events to your
attention:

The PVV vun Brooklyn and Umgegend is having its Annual
Presidents´ Day Dinner on Sunday, February 20th, 2011 at the
Plattduetsche Park in Franklin Square. Among this year´s
honorees are our very own Agnes and Max Kramer who have
been handling the souvenirs for the Steuben Parade for the
last few years. If you can, please show your gratitude and
support by attending this wonderful event. RSVP to Renate
Buck at 516-333-4710 or renate@optonline.net.

Meanwhile, the Liederkranz Foundation is holding an Alpine
Enzian Fest on Saturday, February 5th, 2011. There will be
live music by the "Ennstaler Bergzigeuner" from Austria, a
Dinner Buffet and Late Night Snack. Tickets are $49, and you
may RSVP to info@openskieshospitality.com or 212-534-0880.

A bit later in spring, we are looking forward to a Maifest we
will be hosting in cooperation with Circle Line on their pier on
West 42nd Street; we are also looking forward to our
Crowning of Miss German-America. If you know young ladies
interested in running for Queen or Princess, or if you know
applicants for Junior Princess or our Junior General, please
contact Connie Rom at 516-575-8558.

Our Steuben Parade meetings will be back starting March
2011, and information about date and time will go out as we
get closer. In the meantime, to stay tuned on everything the
Steuben Parade Committee and the German-American
Committee are up to, please visit www.SteubenParade.com
regularly. Also, you can "friend" us on Facebook at

So, stay in touch... all the best for 2011,
